What's happening

Q1 FY27 (Apr-Jun 2026) consolidated EBITDA rose about 25% year-on-year to roughly Rs 9,300 crore on strong India volumes and steel realisations, though it eased versus the record Q4 FY26 as prices cooled; net profit of roughly Rs 2,320-2,385 crore was up year-on-year but down over 20% sequentially. In July 2026 the board approved a large capex of about Rs 33,870 crore (~$3.5bn) to expand the NINL plant in Odisha by roughly 5 million tonnes, part of a push toward 40 million tonnes of India capacity by 2030. Provisional Q2 FY27 (Jul-Sep 2026) volumes released on October 8 showed record domestic production and sales, but full financial results for the quarter had not yet been announced as of October 15, 2026.

In plain terms

Tata Steel makes and sells steel, and a meaningful chunk of the business sits in Europe (Netherlands and UK), where plants have struggled with high costs and weak demand, while the India business is the current profit engine. The company just committed roughly Rs 34,000 crore to build more India capacity at a time when net debt is already around Rs 80,000 crore - a bet that demand growth justifies more leverage. Quarter-to-quarter profit swings track volatile global steel prices and the pace of European restructuring savings, not a smooth growth line.

Quarters

Q1 FY27: revenue ~Rs 60,790 crore (+14.3% YoY, -3.9% QoQ); EBITDA ~Rs 9,260-9,370 crore depending on source (+~25% YoY, -5.7% QoQ) as margin eased to ~15.2% from 15.5% in Q4 FY26; net profit ~Rs 2,320-2,385 crore - sources show a small, non-material spread on the exact figure, but agree it was up year-on-year and down more than 20% versus the record Q4 FY26. Management pointed to the NINL expansion as the next India growth lever rather than one-off items distorting the quarter. Q2 FY27 financial results are still pending; provisional volumes (released Oct 8, 2026) showed India crude steel output of 6.21 MT (+10% YoY) and sales of 5.97 MT (+7% YoY), with record auto and branded/retail volumes - a volume-led beat that still needs to show up in margins once results land.

Performance

Heads-up on splits: Tata Steel has split its shares or issued bonus shares before (most recently 10-for-1 on 28 Jul 2022 and ×1.5 on 11 Aug 2004). A sudden price drop around a split date is usually just the price adjusting for the extra shares, not a crash.

The stock is down 18.6% from its May 2026 peak of Rs 216.66 but up 3.92% over one year, roughly in line with peer JSW Steel's +4.01% and well ahead of the Nifty's -9.19% - this reads as a broad steel-cycle pullback, not a company-specific crash, and both historical splits (2004, 2022) are ordinary stock splits rather than demergers, so no hidden spin-off distortion needs adjusting for here. Over 3 and especially 5 years, Tata Steel has lagged JSW Steel (47.99% vs 54.3% over 3Y; 44.97% vs 76.45% over 5Y), consistent with the drag from loss-making European operations that JSW's India-only footprint doesn't carry.

Valuation

At a P/E of about 19.7x and P/B of about 2.1x, Tata Steel is not statistically cheap for a cyclical steelmaker - these multiples already price in India capacity growth and an eventual recovery in European profitability. Whether that is cheap depends entirely on the NINL expansion and the European cost-cutting program delivering; if either slips, the multiple has room to re-rate down rather than up.

Growth

Growth is currently volume-led in India (record Q2 FY27 output and sales, auto and retail volumes at highs) while margins in the same period eased slightly (15.2% vs 15.5% EBITDA margin in Q1 FY27) - this is less durable than growth where both volume and margin rise together, which matters more in a commodity business like steel.

Health

Net debt is around Rs 80,144 crore (March 2026), with net debt/EBITDA improved to 2.3x from 3.0x and debt-to-equity near 0.84x - financial risk, not cash conversion, is the thing to watch, given the fresh ~Rs 33,870 crore NINL capex commitment layered on top of an already leveraged European turnaround. Business risk (steel price cycles, European demand) compounds that leverage rather than being a separate, smaller concern.

Ownership

Promoters (Tata Sons group) hold 32.94% as of June 2026, down marginally from 33.19% in March 2026, with 0% of promoter shares pledged - a clean pledge position. LIC holds about 6.37% and institutions overall are well represented (FII 18.90%, DII 27.1%, including mutual funds 14.71%), making this a broadly institutionally-owned large-cap with no pledging red flag.

The View

The one thing to watch

Whether the European operations (Netherlands/UK) turn sustainably profitable as restructuring savings land - that, more than Indian volume growth, will determine if the current valuation is justified.

Strengths

  • +India EBITDA up ~25% YoY to roughly Rs 9,300 crore in Q1 FY27 on strong domestic realisations
  • +Record Q2 FY27 domestic volumes: crude steel 6.21 MT (+10% YoY), sales 5.97 MT (+7% YoY)
  • +Zero promoter share pledging as of June 2026
  • +Net debt/EBITDA improved from 3.0x to 2.3x

Watchpoints

  • !Fresh ~Rs 33,870 crore NINL capex commitment (approved July 2026) adds to an already ~Rs 80,144 crore net debt load
  • !European restructuring still in progress: ~1,600 Netherlands job cuts and UK blast-furnace closures affecting ~2,800 jobs, with savings targeted only through FY26-FY28
  • !Net profit of ~Rs 2,320-2,385 crore in Q1 FY27 fell over 20% versus Q4 FY26 even as EBITDA margin compressed to 15.2%
  • !5-year returns (44.97%) have meaningfully lagged peer JSW Steel (76.45%)

How sure are we about the data? · Moderate

Cross-checked Q1 FY27 EBITDA (~Rs 9,260-9,370cr) and revenue (~Rs 60,790cr) across multiple sources with consistent figures; net profit for Q1 FY27 showed a minor spread (Rs 2,318cr vs Rs 2,385cr) across sources - immaterial, both directionally up YoY and down QoQ. ROE estimates varied more widely (9.7% to 11.4%) depending on standalone vs consolidated basis and source date; the lower, more recent consolidated figure was favoured. Full Q2 FY27 (Jul-Sep 2026) financial results had not been published as of October 15, 2026 - only provisional volume data was available, and the exact results date is Not verified - check Tata Steel's investor page or Screener. Shareholding, dividend and price/return figures were taken from the verified data block supplied.
