What's happening

The stock closed at ₹249.85, just above its 52-week low of ₹244.65 and 27.2% below its September 2024 peak of ₹343.24. In the last three months Power Grid completely commissioned two large transmission projects (the 20 GW Rajasthan renewable-evacuation line and a 2,500 MW Bidar-Karnataka solar-zone line) and bought three small transmission SPVs in Gujarat for roughly ₹39-58 crore combined, continuing its usual pattern of winning and absorbing TBCB projects. Q2 FY27 (July-September 2026 quarter) results have not been reported yet as of 15 October 2026; based on last year's pattern they are likely due in early November, so this is not an immediate-days event but worth watching within the month.

In plain terms

Power Grid doesn't sell power - it owns the high-voltage wires that carry electricity across India, and the government regulator fixes how much return it can earn on that wire network. That makes earnings unusually predictable for an Indian company. The tension: the stock is down 27% from its 2024 high and has lagged both the Nifty and its named peer (Adani Energy Solutions) badly over the last year, while its return ratios (ROE, ROCE) have been sliding for about two years. It still pays a reliable, growing dividend, but the business is no longer re-rating the way a growth stock would - it is pricing more like a bond-like utility whose returns on new capital are flattening.

Quarters

Consolidated quarterly trend (Screener): Sep-25 sales ₹11,476cr/EBITDA ₹9,055cr/PAT ₹3,566cr; Dec-25 sales ₹12,395cr/EBITDA ₹10,607cr/PAT ₹4,185cr; Mar-26 sales ₹11,666cr/EBITDA ₹5,303cr/PAT ₹4,546cr; Jun-26 sales ₹11,497cr/EBITDA ₹9,430cr/PAT ₹3,598cr. Flag: the Mar-26 quarter's EBITDA margin (about 45%) is far below the 79-86% seen in every other recent quarter even though PAT was the highest of the four - this looks like a one-off accounting item (possibly a provision or depreciation/other-expense adjustment) rather than a genuine operating shift. Not verified - check the Q4 FY26 notes to accounts on the exchange filing before treating that quarter's EBITDA as comparable. On the Q2 FY26 earnings call management reaffirmed FY26 guidance of about ₹28,000cr capex and ₹20,000cr capitalisation, cited an order book of roughly ₹1,52,000cr, and flagged right-of-way and supply-chain delays as execution risks alongside large upcoming opportunities (Brahmaputra basin, HVDC corridors, renewable-energy evacuation).

Performance

Heads-up on splits: Power Grid Corporation of India has split its shares or issued bonus shares before (most recently ×1.33 on 12 Sept 2023 and ×1.33 on 29 Jul 2021). A sudden price drop around a split date is usually just the price adjusting for the extra shares, not a crash.

Over 5 years the stock has returned 108.78% versus the Nifty's 24.46% - a strong period of outperformance. But the picture inverts over shorter windows: down 11.29% over 1 year versus the Nifty's -9.19% and versus peer Adani Energy Solutions' +43.42%; down 10.59% over 3 months versus Nifty's -4.47%. The stock has undergone two 1:3 bonus-share issues (2021 and 2023), not a demerger or spin-off, so there is no missing value to add back - the return series already reflects these correctly. The 27.2% drawdown from the September 2024 peak is a genuine price decline, not a corporate-action artifact; it has pulled the stock to just above its 52-week low.

Valuation

P/E is reported in a narrow band of roughly 14.6x-16x and P/B around 2.3x-2.5x across sources (Screener, Value Research, Bajaj Broking) - no major outlier to set aside. Why it could look cheap: regulated utilities with falling ROE typically see multiples compress, and this one has fallen alongside the stock's 27% drawdown. Whether it is actually cheap depends on whether the regulator-approved return on equity for future capex (the thing that ultimately sets Power Grid's earnings power) stays at current levels or resets lower - that is a policy variable, not something the current P/E alone answers.

Growth

Growth is real but slow: Screener flags 5-year sales growth of only about 3.35% a year, and quarterly sales have been essentially flat in the ₹11,000-12,500cr range for over a year. This is volume-led (new transmission lines coming online, order book of ~₹1,52,000cr) rather than margin-led - margins have if anything been under pressure, with ROE falling from 18.30% (Mar-24) to 15.26% (Mar-26) and ROCE from 12.47% to 8.63% over the same stretch. A commodity-margin story this is not, but a capital-efficiency story that is quietly weakening is.

Health

Debt-to-equity sits around 1.45x-1.48x, which is normal and expected for a regulated, capital-intensive transmission utility that is financed to fund long-lived assets - this is business-model leverage, not distress. The dividend payout ratio is high (Screener cites ~58%), and the TTM dividend of ₹9/share (3.6% yield) has been paid on schedule across first interim, second interim and final tranches for FY26, which is a reasonable proxy that profits are indeed turning into distributable cash. Whether operating cash flow fully covers the capex programme without rising debt is not verified here - check the cash flow statement on Screener before concluding health is unambiguous. The main watch item is business risk (falling ROE/ROCE on new capital) rather than financial/solvency risk.

Ownership

Promoters are the Government of India, held through the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, at 51.34% (as of June 2026) - unchanged and with a formally declared nil pledge for FY26. Institutions hold about 45.03% and public holders only 3.63%, meaning this is overwhelmingly a government-plus-institutional register with very little free float in individual hands. No specific marquee individual investor is flagged as holding a notable stake in the sources checked - if you were expecting to see a well-known investor's name on this register, it is not there.

The View

The one thing to watch

The Q2 FY27 (September 2026 quarter) results, expected in early November 2026, will show whether the Mar-26 quarter's unusual EBITDA margin was a one-off accounting item or the start of a real margin trend, and whether the ROE/ROCE slide is stabilising.

Strengths

  • +Order book of roughly ₹1,52,000cr provides multi-year revenue visibility for a regulated-return business
  • +99.8% system availability across ~1,86,595 circuit km of transmission lines underpins the regulated-return claim
  • +Zero promoter pledge declared for FY26, with the promoter being the Government of India itself
  • +TTM dividend of ₹9/share for a 3.6% yield, paid consistently across three tranches through FY26

Watchpoints

  • !ROE down from 18.30% (Mar-24) to 15.26% (Mar-26) and ROCE down from 12.47% to 8.63% over the same two years - a genuine multi-year decline, not noise
  • !Mar-26 quarter's EBITDA margin (~45%) is sharply out of line with the 79-86% range seen in surrounding quarters - unexplained in the sources checked and needs filing-level verification before treating it as a real operating shift
  • !Stock down 11.29% over 1 year while named peer Adani Energy Solutions is up 43.42% over the same period - a large relative performance gap worth understanding before assuming sector-wide weakness
  • !Management itself flagged right-of-way and supply-chain delays as execution risks to the ₹28,000cr FY26 capex target

How sure are we about the data? · Moderate

Cross-checked quarterly sales/EBITDA/PAT and valuation ratios across Screener, Value Research and Bajaj Broking - P/E (14.6x-16x) and ROCE (8.63%-10.18%) show minor cross-source spread but no outlier large enough to need discarding. Shareholding and nil-pledge status confirmed via Trendlyne and a dedicated SEBI-disclosure news item. Could not verify the exact cause of the Mar-26 quarter's low EBITDA margin or confirm operating-cash-flow coverage of capex from the sources checked - flagged above rather than estimated.
