What's happening

The board meets October 22-23, 2026 to approve Q2 FY27 (quarter ended September 2026) results and consider an interim dividend - that's within the week, so treat any figures dated after October 15, 2026 as not yet verified. Separately, Infosys has named Ashiss Kumar Dash, a 31-year company veteran, as CEO-designate to succeed Salil Parekh as MD & CEO from April 1, 2027 - the first time an internally-promoted executive has taken the top job. The stock has also rallied roughly 8% over five sessions after Parekh said AI-related work could grow from today's small base to nearly half of all work within two to three years.

In plain terms

This is a mature, highly profitable, nearly debt-free business paying out a lot of cash (4.3% dividend yield plus a recent buyback) - but its underlying growth has slowed to roughly 2-3% a year in constant currency, and the market has marked the stock down 41% from its late-2024 peak partly on fears that AI could erode the billable-hours model IT services firms are built on. The tension is real: management is betting that AI becomes a growth engine rather than a threat, and the next two quarters of guidance will show which story is actually unfolding.

Quarters

Q1 FY27 (quarter ended June 2026): revenue $5,082m, up 2.4% YoY and 1.0% QoQ in constant currency; operating margin 21.1%; FY27 revenue guidance was revised to a narrow 1.5%-3.0% constant-currency band. In rupee terms, recent quarters were: Jun-25 revenue ₹42,279cr / PAT ₹6,924cr; Sep-25 ₹44,490cr / ₹7,375cr; Dec-25 ₹45,479cr / ₹6,666cr; Mar-26 ₹46,402cr / ₹8,509cr. PAT bounced around more than operating performance would suggest - Screener attributes part of this to a swinging effective tax rate (21%-30% across quarters), so EBITDA (steadily up, ₹9,943cr to ₹11,167cr) is the cleaner trend to watch, not the PAT line. AI-linked revenue rose from 5.5% to 8.2% of total revenue in one quarter - fast growth, but off a small base, so don't read too much into the percentage move yet. Net-new business made up 61% of large-deal wins, a healthy sign it isn't just renewing existing contracts. Q2 FY27 numbers (due Oct 22-23, 2026) were not yet out as of this report - not verified.

Performance

Heads-up on splits: Infosys has split its shares or issued bonus shares before (most recently 2-for-1 on 4 Sept 2018, 2-for-1 on 15 Jun 2015 and 2-for-1 on 2 Dec 2014). A sudden price drop around a split date is usually just the price adjusting for the extra shares, not a crash.

The stock trades at ₹1,116, down 41.3% from its December 2024 peak of ₹1,901 and in the middle of its 52-week range (₹985-₹1,654). This isn't a corporate-action artifact - there's no demerger or spin-off involved, just ordinary stock splits, which don't distort the price series - so the drawdown is a genuine market reassessment. It's also part of a broader pattern: Infosys has underperformed the Nifty over 1, 3 and 5 years (-21.5% vs -10.1% over 1Y; -14.5% vs +15.4% over 3Y; -28.5% vs +23.2% over 5Y), and has roughly tracked its closest peer TCS, which has also lost value over most of these periods. The uncomfortable fact: both major Indian IT bellwethers have destroyed shareholder value over five years while the broader market rallied strongly - this is a sector-wide re-rating, not a company-specific stumble.

Valuation

P/E sits around 14x (sources cluster between 13.2x and 14.4x; a 13.26x forward reading is in the same range), which is on the cheaper side of its own history. Why it's cheap: constant-currency growth has slowed to low single digits and the market is pricing in a real risk that AI compresses the traditional services-billing model. Whether that makes it cheap in an absolute sense is a separate question - a low-growth IT major trading at 14x earnings is arguably fairly priced for slow growth, not obviously a bargain.

Growth

Growth is weak and best described as margin-led, not volume-led: constant-currency revenue growth is running at 2-3% a year, with FY27 guidance capped at 1.5%-3.0%, while operating margin has stayed broadly stable near 21%. Whatever profit resilience shows up is coming from cost discipline rather than expanding volumes. AI-linked revenue growing from 5.5% to 8.2% of the book in one quarter looks dramatic in percentage terms, but it's off a small base (rule of thumb: tiny-base percentages overstate the story) - too early to call it a genuine new growth leg.

Health

Financial risk is very low: borrowings of about ₹9,176cr against total assets of ₹154,288cr, essentially a net-cash business, with ROE near 32% and ROCE near 40% showing strong capital efficiency. Profits do convert well into underlying operating cash (EBITDA trend is steady and rising), though reported PAT has been lumpier than operations alone would explain, due to a swinging tax rate across quarters rather than a cash-conversion problem. The real concern here is business risk - demand and pricing pressure in IT services as AI changes how work is delivered - not balance-sheet risk.

Ownership

Promoters hold 13.82% as of June 2026 (down modestly from 14.38% in March 2026), with zero shares pledged - no distress signal there. The Narayana Murthy family (Narayana Murthy, Sudha Murty, Rohan Murty, Akshata Murty and Ekagrah Rohan Murty) together hold about 4.06%. Notably, co-founders Nandan Nilekani and Sudha Murty chose not to tender shares in the ₹18,000cr buyback completed in December 2025 (100 million shares extinguished, 2.41% of pre-buyback equity) - a mild signal they're not looking to cash out. Institutional ownership is heavy and broad: FIIs hold 27.09%, DIIs 42.96% (including LIC and domestic mutual funds), public the remaining 13%. No single famous outside investor (e.g., no prominent individual guru-investor) features prominently on the register beyond the founder family and large institutions.

The View

The one thing to watch

The Q2 FY27 results due October 22-23, 2026 - specifically whether constant-currency revenue growth tracks the low or high end of the 1.5%-3.0% FY27 guidance band, and whether AI-linked revenue keeps climbing past 8.2% of the total - will show whether AI is becoming a genuine growth driver for Infosys or still a small, early-stage contributor.

Strengths

  • +Near debt-free balance sheet - borrowings of ~₹9,176cr against ~₹154,288cr of assets, with ROE ~32% and ROCE ~40%
  • +Returning substantial cash to shareholders: 4.3% dividend yield (₹48/share TTM) plus a completed ₹18,000cr buyback in December 2025
  • +Large-deal win mix is healthy - 61% net-new business rather than just contract renewals
  • +AI-linked revenue nearly doubled as a share of the book in one quarter (5.5% to 8.2%), with management guiding toward it becoming a much larger share of work over the next 2-3 years

Watchpoints

  • !FY27 constant-currency revenue growth guidance is just 1.5%-3.0% - among the slowest in the company's history, and this band has already been revised once
  • !Quarterly PAT has swung (₹6,924cr to ₹8,509cr over four quarters) partly due to a moving effective tax rate (21%-30%), not pure operating performance - don't read the PAT line alone as the growth story
  • !Stock is down 41.3% from its December 2024 peak and has underperformed the Nifty and peer TCS over 1, 3 and 5 years - the market has structurally re-rated the stock lower on AI-disruption concerns for the IT services model
  • !Leadership transition ahead: Salil Parekh steps down as MD & CEO on April 1, 2027, handing over to internally-promoted Ashiss Kumar Dash - a continuity test even if the handover is being managed in an orderly way

How sure are we about the data? · Moderate

Valuation ratios vary slightly by source - P/E ranges 13.2x-14.4x, ROE 31.9%-33.8%, ROCE 40.0%-43.4% - Screener's figures were used as primary (closer to filings) with the higher GuruFocus readings noted as the outlier set aside, per sourcing policy. Q2 FY27 results (quarter ended September 2026) had not been released as of this report's data cutoff (October 15, 2026) - any such figures should be checked fresh on Screener. CEO succession and December 2025 buyback details corroborated across multiple news sources and Infosys's own press release.
