What's happening

Eternal's board meets on 21 October 2026 (next week) to approve Q2 FY27 (July-September 2026) results, with an earnings call the same evening - so this report sits right before that print. The last reported quarter, Q1 FY27 (June 2026), showed consolidated revenue up 182% YoY to ₹20,211 crore and net profit up 268% YoY to ₹92 crore, with Blinkit overtaking Zomato's food-delivery business to become 77.5% of group revenue and posting its first-ever positive quarterly EBITDA. Other recent news: a small 'Nugget' business was sold off for ₹35 crore, an expanded AI partnership with OpenAI was announced, and District added a new 'stores' booking category.

In plain terms

Most people know this company as the Zomato food-delivery app, but the bigger business today is Blinkit, the 10-minute grocery app - it now brings in more revenue than food delivery does. The tension: Blinkit has only just started making a small operating profit after years of losses, and the stock is priced as if that profit will keep growing fast. If competition from Zepto, Swiggy Instamart or a JioMart quick-delivery push squeezes margins, the story changes quickly.

Quarters

Q1 FY27 (Jun 2026): consolidated revenue ₹20,211 crore (+182% YoY, +~182% driven mainly by Blinkit's expansion rather than any one-off accounting item - no non-comparability flagged by the company this quarter). Net profit of ₹92 crore was up 268% YoY, but that implies last year's base was only around ₹25 crore, so the percentage is a tiny-base effect, not a sign of a mature, repeatable profit stream - profit also fell roughly 47% sequentially from Q4 FY26. The more useful number: consolidated adjusted EBITDA rose 223% YoY (and 29% QoQ) to a record ₹555 crore, and Blinkit alone swung from an EBITDA loss of ₹42 crore a year ago to a positive ₹365 crore. Management reiterated it is on track for 3,000 Blinkit stores by March 2027 and guided toward 5-6% EBITDA margin (as % of order value) over time.

No splits or demergers here (has_corporate_action is false), so the price series can be read at face value. The stock is down 10.4% from its 52-week/one-year high of ₹354.35, which was hit exactly a year ago on 15 October 2025 - that is ordinary volatility ahead of results, not a crash. Zoom out and the picture is very different: +184.6% over 3 years and +120.3% over 5 years, versus the Nifty's +15.9% and +23.8% over the same periods, and far ahead of listed peer Swiggy, which is down about 49%. One caveat: Swiggy only listed on exchanges in November 2024, so its quoted '3Y' and '5Y' return figures here aren't true like-for-like histories and should be read with that in mind, not as literal 3-5 year performance.

Valuation

This is not a cheap stock by conventional measures, and it's worth separating why from whether. P/E estimates across data providers range wildly - from roughly 117x to over 700x - which itself is a red flag that trailing earnings are small and possibly distorted by a one-off item in a prior quarter; not verified which figure is clean, check Screener directly. P/B is around 10x. Separately, ROE (~1.2%) and ROCE (~2.6-3.3%) are both well below typical market and peer benchmarks. The high multiple exists because profits have only just turned positive and the market is pricing in years of future margin expansion from Blinkit, not today's earnings - whether that bet pays off is an open question, not a given.

Growth

Growth looks genuinely volume-led, not just price-led: management's commentary ties the revenue jump to expanding Blinkit store count and order volumes (not price increases), and the fact that EBITDA margin is improving alongside volume (Blinkit EBITDA swung from a loss to a profit) means this isn't dilutive growth - both scale and margin are moving in the same direction, which is the more durable combination.

Health

Data on debt is contradictory across sources - one dataset shows zero debt and a large net cash position (~₹6,600 crore), another shows total debt of ~₹4,592 crore and net debt of ~₹3,069 crore as of March 2025. Not verified - check Screener for the latest balance sheet before relying on either figure. What is consistent: the business has historically been funded through equity raises rather than borrowing, so financial (leverage) risk looks low. The real risk here is business risk - thin absolute profitability relative to scale, and intensifying quick-commerce competition - not balance-sheet stress.

Ownership

Promoter holding is 0% - there is no promoter group on this register at all, which is unusual for an Indian listed company and worth knowing rather than assuming a typical founder-led ownership structure. Pledging is correspondingly 0% since there's no promoter block to pledge. Foreign institutions hold roughly 29%, domestic institutions roughly 7.6%, and public shareholders roughly 7.8% (the remaining categories are not fully broken out here - check Screener for the complete table). Two previously famous names are notably absent now: Tiger Global exited its entire stake back in 2023, and Antfin (the Alibaba-linked entity) sold out its remaining ~1.9% stake via a block deal in August 2025.

The View

The one thing to watch

Whether the Q2 FY27 results (board meeting and earnings call on 21 October 2026) show Blinkit's EBITDA margin holding or improving further - that will indicate if Q1's profit turn was the start of a trend or a one-off, and it's the number the current valuation is really betting on.

Strengths

  • +Blinkit posted its first-ever positive quarterly EBITDA in Q1 FY27 (₹365 crore, versus a ₹42 crore loss a year earlier) and now generates 77.5% of group revenue
  • +Consolidated adjusted EBITDA hit a record ₹555 crore in Q1 FY27, up 223% YoY and 29% QoQ
  • +3-year (+184.6%) and 5-year (+120.3%) stock returns have far outpaced the Nifty (+15.9% / +23.8%) and listed peer Swiggy (-49%)
  • +No promoter pledging risk, since there is no promoter block at all on the shareholding register

Watchpoints

  • !ROE (~1.2%) and ROCE (~2.6-3.3%) remain well below market benchmarks even as the stock trades at a very high earnings multiple
  • !The 268% YoY profit jump is off a tiny base (roughly ₹25 crore a year ago) and profit actually fell ~47% sequentially from Q4 FY26 - not yet a smooth, repeatable trend
  • !Quick-commerce competition is intensifying (Zepto, Swiggy Instamart, and a reported JioMart 30-minute grocery push) right as Blinkit's margin path is still unproven
  • !Debt figures conflict across data sources (net-cash vs. ~₹4,592 crore total debt reported elsewhere) - worth confirming directly before relying on either health picture

How sure are we about the data? · Moderate

Q1 FY27 revenue, profit and EBITDA figures were cross-checked across multiple independent outlets (IndMoney, IndiaInfoline, Republic World, NiftyTrader) and were consistent. Shareholding and pledging figures were cross-checked across Trendlyne and MarketsMojo and were consistent on 0% promoter holding and 0% pledge. Not reconciled: P/E ratio varies hugely by source (roughly 117x to over 700x) and total debt figures conflict (net-cash vs. ~₹4,592 crore debt) - both flagged as unverified rather than averaged. Swiggy's quoted 3Y/5Y returns are not genuine multi-year histories since it only listed in November 2024.
