What's happening
BEL's Q2 FY27 (Jul-Sep 2026) results are expected around end-October 2026 (based on last year's October 31 reporting date), roughly two weeks out - not yet formally confirmed by the company. In the interim, it has kept announcing incremental defence orders: about ₹648 crore since late August and a further ₹533 crore disclosed on October 13, 2026. The stock is trading at ₹380.4, about 18.7% below its March 2026 peak of ₹467.81, amid analyst concern over stretched valuation and a margin dip in the June 2026 quarter.
In plain terms
This is a well-run, debt-free government company riding India's push to build defence equipment at home, with strong returns on capital. The tension is price: the market has been paying close to 45 times earnings and over 11 times book value for it, which only makes sense if growth and margins stay strong. The June 2026 quarter wobbled on margins, and the stock has given back some of its gains since - that is the market testing whether the premium was justified, not a sign the business itself broke.
Quarters
Quarterly revenue has grown at double-digit pace: ₹5,792 crore in Sep 2025 (+25.75% YoY, net profit ₹1,287 crore, +17.9%), ₹7,154 crore in Dec 2025 (net profit ₹1,580 crore), and a seasonally large ₹10,224 crore in Mar 2026 (net profit ₹2,226 crore) - BEL's Q4 is routinely its biggest quarter as government-linked execution peaks before fiscal year-end. The most recent reported quarter, Jun 2026 (Q1 FY27), showed revenue of ₹5,547 crore and net profit of ₹1,055 crore, with operating margin slipping to roughly 25% from the high-20s/30% typical of recent quarters - commentary attributed this to a jump in raw material costs (reported up ~55.7%) and a less favourable product mix, not a one-off accounting item. For FY26, management had guided to over 15% revenue growth, EBITDA margin above 27%, and order inflow exceeding ₹27,000 crore (excluding the QRSAM program) - the order book stood near ₹74,500 crore as of October 2025, still close to that level into FY27.
Performance
Heads-up on splits: Bharat Electronics has split its shares or issued bonus shares before (most recently 3-for-1 on 15 Sept 2022, ×1.1 on 28 Sept 2017 and 10-for-1 on 16 Mar 2017). A sudden price drop around a split date is usually just the price adjusting for the extra shares, not a crash.

Returns have been exceptional on a multi-year view: +183% over 3 years and +459% over 5 years, both far ahead of the Nifty (+16.6% and +24.5% respectively), though BEL has lagged peer HAL over 5 years (+621%). Over 1 year the stock is down 6.3%, beating a falling Nifty (-9.2%) but trailing HAL (+2.4%). None of BEL's four stock splits (2015, 2017 x2, 2022) occurred near the March 2026 peak, so the current 18.7% drawdown from peak is a genuine price pullback, not a corporate-action artifact that needs adjusting for.

Valuation
BEL trades at roughly 45x trailing earnings and about 11.6x book value - expensive by most yardsticks. It is expensive because the market is pricing in a debt-free balance sheet, ROE near 27% and ROCE above 36%, roughly three years of revenue visibility from the order book, and a structural tailwind from India's defence-indigenisation push. Whether that premium is justified is a separate question: the ~19% pullback from peak suggests the market has already started trimming some of that optimism after the Q1 FY27 margin miss, but the stock is still far from cheap on conventional multiples.
Growth
Growth has mostly been volume-led - revenue has grown in the mid-to-high teens to mid-20s percent range across recent quarters - rather than purely margin-driven. That said, the June 2026 quarter's margin compression (to around 25% from closer to 29-30%) on higher input costs is a reminder that this is still a manufacturing business exposed to raw-material and product-mix swings, not a pure services story with guaranteed margin expansion.
Health
Financial risk looks low: BEL carries almost no debt (borrowings of roughly ₹65 crore against a market cap near ₹2.78 lakh crore) and generates high returns on capital. The more relevant risk is business risk - near-total dependence on Indian government defence budgets and procurement timelines, working capital tied to government payment cycles, and the margin sensitivity just seen in Q1 FY27. Cash conversion (operating cash flow versus reported profit) was not verified in this review - check the cash flow statement on Screener before relying on profit quality assumptions.
Ownership
The promoter is the Government of India, holding a stable 51.14% with 0% pledge, which is standard for a PSU promoter and not a governance red flag. Domestic mutual funds hold a meaningful stake (around 15% per aggregator data). Beyond that, FII and other institutional figures varied noticeably between data sources - one aggregator's reported FII/DII/public splits did not even sum to 100% - so the precise institutional breakdown is not verified here and should be checked directly against the company's BSE/NSE shareholding disclosure. No well-known individual investor appears on the register; this is an institutionally and government-held stock, not one associated with a marquee retail investor.
The View
The one thing to watch
The Q2 FY27 results (expected around late October 2026) - specifically whether EBITDA margin recovers from the Q1 FY27 dip and whether order inflow stays on track with the FY26 guided pace of over ₹27,000 crore a year - will show whether the recent margin pressure was a one-off or the start of a trend.
Strengths
- +Debt-free balance sheet (~₹65 crore borrowings) with ROE of 27.4% and ROCE of 36.4%
- +Order book of roughly ₹74,500 crore (as of Oct 2025), giving multi-year revenue visibility
- +Revenue has grown at double-digit to mid-20s percent rates across the last several quarters, e.g. +25.75% YoY in Sep 2025 quarter
- +Continued fresh order wins into FY27 (₹648 crore mid-September, ₹533 crore disclosed October 13, 2026) showing order momentum hasn't stalled
Watchpoints
- !Jun 2026 quarter operating margin fell to about 25% from a typical high-20s/30% range, on higher raw material costs and product mix - needs to be confirmed as temporary in the next print
- !Valuation remains rich at ~45x earnings and ~11.6x book, leaving little room for disappointment
- !Stock is down 18.7% from its March 2026 peak and has underperformed peer HAL over both 1-year and 5-year horizons
- !Revenue is concentrated in Indian government defence procurement, exposing it to budget-cycle timing and any shift toward imported equipment
How sure are we about the data? · Moderate
Quarterly sales, operating profit and net profit figures were cross-checked across Screener.in and multiple news outlets (BusinessToday, Bajaj Broking, Upstox, Business Standard), which agreed closely. Order book and FY26 guidance figures were corroborated across two to three independent sources. The exact FII/DII/public shareholding split could not be verified - one aggregator's percentages did not sum to 100%, so only the promoter stake (51.14%, no pledge) is stated with confidence; check the live shareholding disclosure on BSE/NSE or Screener for the institutional breakdown. The Q2 FY27 results date (~Oct 31, 2026) is inferred from last year's reporting pattern and not yet a confirmed board-meeting date - verify on the exchange announcement.
